How Choghadiya is worked out
The daytime, from sunrise to sunset, is split into eight equal parts. The night, from sunset to the next sunrise, is split into eight more, so the length of each part changes with the season. Each part has one of seven traditional names: Udveg, Char, Labh, Amrit, Kaal, Shubh and Rog. The weekday sets the first name of the day and of the night, and the names then follow a fixed order. This page uses the order of a widely used published panchang. A Gujarati jyotish book published in Mumbai in Vikram Samvat 1980 (1923–24) gives the same order, day and night, for all seven weekdays. The times are our own, worked out from the sunrise and sunset we compute for this city.

Rule: Choghadiya: the daytime (sunrise to sunset) and the night (sunset to the next sunrise) are each split into 8 equal parts. The first part of the day has the name that belongs to the weekday's lord: Sunday Udveg, Monday Amrit, Tuesday Rog, Wednesday Labh, Thursday Shubh, Friday Char, Saturday Kaal. The names follow the order Udveg, Char, Labh, Amrit, Kaal, Shubh, Rog, and then start again. The night starts five names on from the day's first name; each later part of the night takes the name two places back in the order. These are the traditional names of the parts: a calendar fact, not a prediction.
