Hindu morning prayers for kids, in 7 days

Seven short Hindu morning prayers for kids, one new shloka a day: on waking, before the feet touch the ground, before study and before breakfast. Each day gives the Sanskrit, an easy reading in English letters and the meaning in simple words, so a child can learn it with a parent.

For every tradition. These short verses belong to no one school. Where families say a word differently, the prayer's page shows both.

  1. Day 1: Look at your hands

Before getting out of bed, open your hands and look at them. This verse says that Lakshmi lives at the tips of the fingers, Sarasvati in the middle of the hand and Govinda at its base.

  2. Day 2: Hello, Mother Earth

Before your feet touch the floor, greet the Earth. This verse calls her a goddess who wears the ocean as her dress, and says sorry for stepping on her.

  3. Day 3: Ganesha, before you begin

Ganesha, with his curved trunk, is remembered first, before any new work. This verse asks him to keep every task free of obstacles. Say it before school or before you start something new.

  4. Day 4: Sarasvati, before study

Sarasvati is the goddess of learning and music. This verse pictures her all in white, with her vina, on a white lotus, and asks her to take away dullness of mind. Say it before you sit down to study.

  5. Day 5: Thank you, teacher

This verse bows to the guru, the teacher, and names the guru as Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva. It is a way to say thank you to the people who teach you.

  6. Day 6: Learning together

Teacher and student say this peace mantra together before a lesson. It asks that the two be kept safe and cared for together, that their learning shine, that they work hard together and never quarrel, and it ends with peace said three times.

  7. Day 7: Before breakfast

This verse comes from the Bhagavad Gita. Here it is said before a meal, so that eating becomes an offering. It says that the offering, the one who offers and the fire are all Brahman, the one reality.
