The story
King Suketuman ruled the city of Bhadravati with his queen Champaka. They had everything except a child, and the king grieved, wondering who would care for the family and its ancestors after him. One day, lost in these thoughts, he rode alone into a deep forest.
At midday, tired and thirsty, he came to a beautiful lake. Around it sages sat, reciting the Veda. The king bowed and asked who they were. They said that they were the Vishvedevas, who had come to bathe, because the month of Magha was only five days away. "Today is Putrada Ekadashi," they told him. "It gives a child to those who keep it."
The king asked them to bless him, and on their word he kept the fast that very day, and broke it the next day as the sages had shown him. He returned home, and in time the queen gave birth to a son, who made his father glad and grew up to care for the people. The text says that this fast gives a child; that is the text's own claim, told here as its claim.
Vaikuntha Ekadashi: how families keep the day
