Also called: Pavitropana Ekadashi
This is the second Putrada, "giver of a child", Ekadashi of the year, in the bright half of Shravana. The Padma Purana also names the next day for Pavitraropana, offering a sacred thread to Vishnu, which is why it is also called Pavitropana Ekadashi.

The story
At the start of the Dvapara age, King Mahijit ruled the city of Mahishmati. He was just and kind, but he had no child, and he grieved. His ministers and his people were sad for him. They went into the forest to find a sage who could help, and they found Lomasha, a sage so old that he loses only one hair at the end of each kalpa, a day of Brahma that lasts a thousand rounds of the four ages.
Lomasha sat in meditation and saw the king's past life. In that life the king had been a poor travelling trader. On a hot day in Jyeshtha, at noon, very thirsty, he came to a pond. A thirsty cow and her calf came to drink there too. He drove them away and drank first himself. That one unkind act, the sage said, was why the king now had no child.
The people asked what they could do. Lomasha told them all to keep the Ekadashi of the bright half of Shravana, called Putrada, and to give its merit to their king. They kept the fast and the night's vigil together and gave him its merit. In time the queen gave birth to a son. The text says that this fast gives a child; that is the text's own claim, told here as its claim. Families also remember the thirsty cow: kindness to animals is part of the lesson.
Fasting is a choice. Anyone who is pregnant, nursing, diabetic, unwell, elderly or on regular medicine should talk to a doctor before fasting.
