ENVibhishan bows down flat before Rama. Rama is glad to hear his humble words. He rises at once, takes him in his long arms and holds him to his chest. With Lakshman he seats Vibhishan beside him and speaks gently, to take away his fear. He asks the lord of Lanka if he and his family are well, since he lives in a bad place. He asks how a person can keep to dharma when wicked people are around him day and night. Rama says he knows Vibhishan's ways: he is skilled in right conduct and does not like wrong. Rama says it is better to live in hell than to be given the company of wicked people. Vibhishan answers that now he has seen Rama's feet, and Rama has taken him as his own servant, he is well.

So saying he prostrated himself; but at the sight the Lord arose in haste with much delight, being pleased to hear his humble address, and took him in his mighty arms and clasped him to his breast; then with his brother seated him by his side, and to calm his votary’s fears spake thus: “Tell me, prince of Lanká, is it all well with you and your family? Your home is in an ill place. How, my friend, can one practise the duties of religion, when encompassed day and night by wicked men? I know all your circumstances, your proficiency in virtue, your aversion to evil. God keep us from evil communications: ’twere better, my son, to live in hell.’ “Now that I have seen your feet, O Ráma, it is all well with me, since you have recognized me as one of your worshippers and have shown mercy upon me.

ENVibhishan goes on. Greed, delusion, envy, pride and conceit, a band of wicked ones, live in the heart only until Rama comes to live there with bow, arrows and quiver at his side. The dark night of “mine” (mamatā), in which love and hate fly happily like owls, lasts in the mind only until the sun of the Lord's glory rises. Vibhishan says that now, seeing Rama's lotus feet, he is well and his great fears are gone. The three kinds of suffering of worldly life do not touch the one to whom Rama is kind. He calls himself a demon of very low nature who never did a good deed, and yet the Lord, whose form even sages do not see in meditation, has gladly held him to his heart.

“So long as the heart is peopled by that villainous crew, avarice, sensuality, selfishness, arrogance and pride, there is no room there for Raghunáth, with his bow and arrows and quiver by his side. The intensely dark night of selfishness, so agreeable to the owl-like passions of love and hate, abides in the soul only until the rising of the sun-like lord. Now I am well, and all my fears are over, in that I have beheld your lotus feet. None of the threefold torments of life has any effect upon him, to whom you in your mercy show favour. I am a demon, utterly vile of nature, who have never observed any pious practices, and yet the lord, to whose vision even the saints have not attained, for all their profound meditation has been pleased to take me to his heart.

ENRama tells Vibhishan his own nature, which Bhushundi, Shiva and Parvati know. If a man who has harmed every living being comes in fear and looks to Rama for shelter, and gives up pride, delusion, deceit and tricks, Rama soon makes him like a holy person. Mother, father, brother, son, wife, body, wealth, home, friends and family: such a person gathers the threads of attachment to all of these, twists them into one rope, and ties his mind with it to Rama's feet. He sees all as equal, wants nothing, and has no joy, grief or fear in his mind. Rama says such a good person lives in his heart as wealth lives in the heart of a greedy man. Saints like Vibhishan are dear to him, and he takes a body for their sake and for no other reason.

“Hearken, friend; I will declare to you my characteristics, as known by Bhusundi, Sambhu and Umá. If a man who has been the curse of the whole world comes trembling and looks to me for protection, if he abjures all his pride and sensuality without guile or subterfuge; I make him at once like one of the saints. Father and mother; kinsfolk, children and wife; life and property; home, friends and establishment; in short, every object of natural affection is gathered up as the strands of a rope wherewith to attach his soul to my feet. He regards all things as alike, without any preference, and with a soul unmoved either by joy, sorrow, or fear. A saint like this is as fixed in my soul as money is in the heart of a miser. Good men like you are my friends, and it is only for their benefit that I have become incarnate.

ENRama tells the lord of Lanka that he has all these virtues, so he is very dear to Rama. Hearing this, the monkey troops all cry victory to the merciful one. Vibhishan cannot have enough of the Lord's words, which are nectar to his ears. Again and again he holds Rama's lotus feet, and his heart cannot hold his love. He says that at first some wish was in his heart, but the river of love for the Lord's feet has carried it away. He asks Rama for pure devotion to him, the devotion that always pleases Shiva. Rama says 'So be it' and at once asks for water from the sea. He says that even if Vibhishan has no wish, a sight of Rama never fails to bear fruit in the world. So saying, Rama puts the royal tilak mark on Vibhishan's forehead, and a great rain of flowers falls from the sky.

“Hearken, Prince of Lanká; all these good qualities are yours, and you are therefore very dear to me.” On hearing Ráma’s speech, all the assembled monkeys exclaimed, ‘Glory to the All-merciful!’ But Vibhíshan, on hearing such ambrosial sounds, could not contain himself: time after time he clasped his lotus feet, his heart bursting with boundless joy. “Hearken, my God, lord of all creation, friend of the suppliant, reader of men’s thoughts; I had at first another wish in my mind; but devotion to my lord’s feet has come upon me like a torrent and swept it away: now in your mercy grant me such pure faith as that which ever gladdens Siva’s soul.” ‘So be it,’ said the Lord, the valiant in fight, and then at once called for water from the sea. “It was not part of your wish, friend, but the sight of me brings reward with it all over the world.” So saying Ráma marked his forehead with the royal tilak: an infinite shower of flowers rained from heaven.

ENThe poet says that those who leave such a Lord and worship another are beasts without the tail and horns. Rama knows Vibhishan as his own and takes him in, and his nature pleases the monkey host. Then Rama speaks. The poet calls him all-knowing, living in every heart, present in every form yet free of all and untouched, the keeper of right conduct, a man for a purpose and the destroyer of the demon race. He asks Sugriva and Vibhishan how the army can cross the deep sea, full of crocodiles, serpents and fish of every kind, very deep and hard to cross in every way. Vibhishan answers that one of Rama's arrows could dry up ten million seas. Even so, he says, right conduct teaches that Rama should go and make a humble request to the Ocean.

Men who forsake such a lord to worship any other are mere beasts without the tails and horns. All the monkeys were charmed with the Lord’s amiability, who had recognized a servant and claimed him for his own. Then the All-wise, who dwelleth in the hearts of all, assuming any form at will, though himself formless and passionless, the champion of religion, the friend of men, and the destroyer of all the demon race, spoke and said: “Hearken monkey-king, valiant monarch of Lanká; how are we to cross the deep ocean, full of alligators, serpents and different kinds of sea monsters, of fathomless profundity and absolutely impassible.” Vibhíshan replied: “Hearken, Rahu-náyak; your arrows could burn up a thousand seas, but still it would be better policy to go and make petition to the god of ocean.

ENRama tells his friend that he has given good advice, and they will try it, if fate helps. Lakshman does not like this plan and is very unhappy at Rama's words. He asks what trust can be put in fate, and tells Rama to let his anger rise and dry up the sea. 'Fate' is the one support of a coward, he says; only the lazy cry 'fate, fate'. Rama laughs and says they will do that too, and asks him to be patient. So saying, the Lord calms his brother and goes to the shore of the sea. He first bows his head to the sea, then sits on the shore on a seat of darbha grass. When Vibhishan came to the Lord, Ravana sent spies after him.

“Friend, you have suggested a good idea; let us try it and may fortune be with us.” This invocation did not please Lakshman; he was much annoyed at Ráma’s words. “Why trust fortune, my lord? give vent to your indignation and dry up the ocean. It is the one resource of a coward in soul to sit still and pray fortune to help him.” Raghu-bír laughed to hear this and said: “I shall do it all the same; but never you mind.” So saying he went to the shore of the salt sea and there took his seat on grass that he had strewn. Now after Vibhíshan had joined Ráma, Rávan sent spies of his own,

ENThe spies begin to praise Rama's nature out loud, and in their great love they forget their disguise. The monkeys then know them to be the enemy's spies. They tie them all up and take them to Sugriva. Sugriva tells the monkeys to cut off a limb of the demons and send them back. The monkeys run, tie the spies and lead them round the camp. They beat them in many ways, and though the spies cry out, the monkeys do not let them go. The spies call on anyone who cuts their noses and ears, in the name of Rama, lord of Kosala, to stop. Lakshman hears this, calls them all near, feels pity, laughs and has them set free at once. He tells them to give this letter into Ravana's hand, and to say to him: 'Destroyer of your family, read Lakshman's words.'

When the monkeys heard that the spies were Ravana's, they tied them up and hurt them in many ways. They began to cut off their ears and noses, but let them go when the spies called on Rama's name. Shuka says that even ten thousand million mouths could not describe Rama's army: bears and monkeys of many colours, with fierce faces, huge and frightening. The one who burned the city and killed Ravana's son is the weakest of them all. There are countless named warriors, hard and fierce, huge, with the strength of countless elephants.

“Of your grace, my lord, be not wroth, but take a blunt reply to a blunt question. As soon as your younger brother joined him, Ráma bestowed upon him the mark of sovereignty. The monkeys, who had heard that we were your spies, put us in bonds and abused us shamefully. They were about to cut off our ears and nose, when we invoked the name of Ráma and they let us go. You ask, my lord, of Ráma’s army; a myriad tongues would fail to tell it: such a host of bears and monkeys of diverse hue and gruesome visage, huge and terrible—the one who set fire to the city and slew your son is the very weakest of them all—champions with innumerable names, fierce and unyielding monsters of vast bulk, with the strength of unnumbered elephants.

ENShuka names some of the chiefs: Dvivid, Mainda, Nila, Nala, Angad, Gada, Vikatasya, Dadhimukh, Kesari, Nishatha, Shatha and Jambavan, a store of strength. Some read bikaṭāsi and saṭha as words that describe the names before them (Growse: "Gada of the mighty sword", "the malignant Nisatha"). The 1922 and 1924 printings read "Angad and the others, fierce" and "Kumud, Gava" here.

ENShuka goes on. Each of these monkeys equals Sugriva, and there are millions like them; who could count them? By Rama's grace their strength has no measure, and they count the three worlds as a blade of grass. He has heard that the monkey troop leaders number eighteen padma (an immense number). There is not one monkey in that army who could not defeat Ravana in battle. They all wring their hands in great anger, because Rama gives them no order. They say they would dry up the sea with its fish and serpents, or fill it with great mountains, and grind Ravana into the dust. They roar and threaten, without any fear, as if they wanted to swallow Lanka.

“Each of these monkeys is equal to Sugríva, and who could count all the myriads like them? By Ráma’s favour their strength is unbounded; they reckon the three spheres of creation as of no more account than a blade of grass. I have heard say, O Rávan, that the monkey chiefs number eighteen thousand billions; and in the whole of the army, my lord, there is not a single monkey who would not conquer you in battle. They are all wringing their hands in excess of passion: ‘Why does not Ráma give us some order, either to swallow the ocean with all its fish and serpents, or at least to fill it up with piles of trees and mighty mountains, and then crush Rávan and lay him low in the dust.’ This is the language that all the monkeys hold. Utterly devoid of fear, they shout and leap about as if they would make Lanká a mere mouthful.

ENShuka says that not even a hundred thousand Sheshas could sing all of Rama's splendour, strength and wisdom. With one arrow he could dry up a hundred seas, yet, wise in right conduct, he asked Ravana's brother for advice. On his advice Rama is asking the Ocean for a path, with kindness in his heart. Ravana laughs. He says that if Rama had such sense, it is no wonder he took monkeys as allies. Trusting the firm words of a born coward, Rama has started a child's stubborn quarrel with the sea. Ravana calls Shuka a fool for praising the enemy falsely, and says he has measured the enemy's strength and wisdom. Where in the world can there be victory and glory for one whose minister is the timid Vibhishan? The envoy grows angry at these wicked words, sees that the moment has come, and takes out the letter. He says Rama's younger brother gave it, and asks Ravana to have it read and cool his chest. Ravana laughs, takes it in his left hand, and calls his minister to read it out.

With a single shaft he could burn up a hundred seas, yet so prudent is he that he took advice of your brother and, on hearing his reply, went to the sea and humbly asked the favor of a passage.” On hearing this, the Ten-headed smiled: “Truly he showed as much sense then as when he took monkeys for his allies. He has put faith in the words of that arrant coward, my brother, and, like a spoiled child, begs of ocean what he will never get. Fool, you have been extolling a mere impostor: I have sounded the depth of my enemy’s strength and skill. Where in the world could any one achieve the glory of a triumph, who had such a cowardly counsellor as Vibhíshan.” The envoy waxed wroth at the wretch’s speech, and thought it a good time to produce the letter. “Ráma’s brother gave me this letter: have it read, my lord, and much good may it do you.” Rávan smiled and took it with his left hand and told his minister, the wretch, to read it out.

ENHearing the letter, Ravana is afraid in his heart, but he smiles and speaks so that all can hear. He compares the letter to a man lying on the ground who tries to grab the sky with his hand; it is only the boastful talk of a small ascetic. Shuka tells Ravana that every word is true. He asks him to give up his proud nature and understand, to put away anger, listen, and end his quarrel with Rama. Raghubir is very gentle, though he is king of all the worlds. When Ravana meets him, the Lord will be kind and will not hold even one of his wrongs against him. Shuka asks Ravana to give Sita back to Rama; this is all he asks. When he speaks of giving back Sita, the fool kicks him. Shuka bows his head at Ravana's feet and goes to where Rama, the ocean of mercy, is. He bows to Rama, tells his story, and by Rama's grace regains his true state. Shiva tells Bhavani (Parvati) that Shuka had been a wise sage who became a demon through the curse of the sage Agastya. Bowing again and again at Rama's feet, the sage goes back to his own hermitage.

The Ten-headed, as he listened, was terror-stricken at heart, but smiled with his lips and cried aloud for all to hear: “He who stretches out his hands to clutch the sky only falls to the ground; a devotee’s idle talk is of small account.” Said Suka: “My lord, every word is true; be wise and abandon your natural arrogance. Cease from wrath and hearken to my advice; make an end, Sire, of your feud with Ráma. Raghubír is exceedingly mild in disposition, though he is the sovereign of all the world. The Lord will be gracious to you directly you approach him, and will not remember even one of your offences. Restore to him Janak’s daughter; this, Sire, is all I ask of you; do it.” When he spoke to him of giving up Síta, the wretch spurned him with his foot; but he bowed his head to the ground before him and then went to join the all-merciful Ráma, and after due obeisance told him all that had happened. By Ráma’s grace, he recovered his proper rank; for it was by the Rishi Agastyás curse, Bhaváni, that he had become a demon, though still retaining the intelligence of a saint. Now, once more in the form of a saint, after again and again prostrating himself at Ráma’s feet, he went his way to his own hermitage.

ENRama tells Lakshman to bring his bow and arrows, so that he can dry up the sea with the fire of his arrows. He says that a humble request to a fool, love for a crooked person, fine advice to a born miser, talk of wisdom to one lost in “mine”, praise of detachment to the very greedy, calm to the angry, and the story of Hari to the lustful are all like seed sown in barren salt land. So saying, Rama strings his bow, and Lakshman is pleased. The Lord sets a terrible arrow to the bow, and a fire flares up inside the Ocean. The crocodiles, serpents and fish are in distress. When the Ocean sees the creatures in the water burning, he fills a golden plate with jewels, gives up his pride and comes in the form of a brahmin.

“Lakshman bring me my bow and arrows: with my fiery darts I will dry up the deep. To use entreaties to a churl, to lavish affection upon a rogue, to deal liberally with a born miser, to discourse of divine wisdom with a man devoted to self, to speak of detachment from the world to the covetous, to tell of Hari to a man under the influence of passion or love, is all the same as sowing the sand in hope of a harvest.” So saying, Ráma strung his bow, a proceeding that pleased Lakshman mightily. The Lord let fly the terrible shaft; a burning pain ensued in the bosom of ocean; the crocodiles, serpents and fish were all sore distrest. When Ocean perceived that these creatures were burning, he filled a golden dish with all kinds of jewels and humbly presented himself in the form of a Bráhman.

ENThe Ocean, afraid, holds the Lord's feet and asks him to forgive all his faults. He says that sky, wind, fire, water and earth are dull by nature. They were made by Maya, sent out by Rama for the sake of creation, as all the scriptures sing. Each stays as the Lord's command has placed it, and so it is at ease. The Ocean says the Lord did well to teach him, but it was Rama who first set his limits. He then says that a drum, a rustic, a shudra, an animal and a woman are all 'adhikārī' of 'tāḍanā'; Growse translates this as 'fit subjects for beating'. These are the Ocean's words in the story, not a statement the poet makes in his own voice; the line is much discussed and is explained in more than one way. The Ocean goes on: by the Lord's power he would dry up and the army would cross, but there would be no greatness for him in that. The Veda says the Lord's command cannot be set aside, so he will quickly do whatever pleases Rama.

Terrified Ocean clasped the Lord’s feet: Pardon me, Sire, all my offences. Air, wind, fire, water and earth are all, my lord, naturally dull and slow to change. They have been produced by the delusive power that you sent forth with a view to creation—so all the scriptures declare—and as each has been fixed by the Lord’s command, so it must remain, to secure its own happiness. My lord has done well in giving me this lesson; but still it was you who first fixed my bounds. A drum, a clown, a churl, a beast, and a woman are all fit subjects for beating. By my lord’s favor, I shall be dried up, the army will cross over, and my glory will be at an end; the scriptures declare the word of the Lord to be unchangeable; do then at once what seemeth you good”

ENThe Ocean says that the monkeys Nila and Nala are two brothers who received a sage's blessing in childhood. By Rama's power, heavy mountains that they touch will float on the water. The Ocean too, keeping the Lord's greatness in his heart, will help as far as his strength allows. In this way, he says, Rama should have a bridge built across the sea, so that this good fame will be sung in the three worlds. He asks Rama to use the arrow he has set to the bow to kill the wicked, sinful men who live on his northern shore. The merciful Rama hears the Ocean's pain and at once takes it away. Seeing Rama's great strength and courage, the Ocean is glad and at ease. He tells the Lord all that has happened, bows at his feet and leaves.

“My lord, there are two monkey brothers, Nila and Nala, who from childhood have been instructed by a sage. The mightiest mountains touched by them will by your favor float upon the waves. I too, remembering your majesty, will assist to the best of my power. In this manner, my lord, you will bridge the sea and the glorious deed will be sung in earth, heaven and hell. With this arrow, Sire, slay the dwellers on my mothern shore, who are vile criminals.” The All-merciful, on hearing Ocean’s grievance, at once removed it, the valiant Ráma.1 At the sight of his mighty vigour Ocean rejoiced and became easy of mind, and after telling him all that had taken place, bowed at his feet and took his leave.

  1. In the Sanskrit Rámáyana this curious incident is related rather more intelligibly. Ocean complains that the Abhíras of the north are such an impure race that he cannot bear to receive into his bosom any stream of which they have drunk. Thereupon, Ràma with his fiery arrow dries up every river in their land, but creates instead a deep chasm in the ground, with a constant supply of water, and blesses the riverless region with exemption from disease. ↩

ENThe Ocean goes back to his home, and Rama likes his advice. Tulsidas says he has sung this story, which takes away the stains of the Kali age, as well as his understanding allows. The poet says that the virtues of Raghupati (Rama) are a home of happiness, put an end to doubt and remove sorrow. He tells his own foolish mind to give up every other hope and trust, and always to sing and hear them.
