Sankashtanashana Ganesha Stotram: Lyrics and Meaning

संकटनाशन गणेश स्तोत्र

Traditional; the printings ascribe it to the Narada Purana

The Sankashtanashana Ganesha Stotram ("the Ganesha hymn that destroys troubles") is a short Sanskrit hymn of eight verses that gives twelve names of Ganesha. Many Hindu families recite it every day, on Wednesdays, and on Sankashti Chaturthi, the monthly fast to Ganesha on the fourth day after the full moon. It is often learned as one of the first Sanskrit prayers, because it is short and its verses are simple.

How to read these English letters (IAST)

Our explanation Narada speaks. Bow your head to the god Vinayaka, the son of Gauri, the dwelling place of his devotees, and remember him every day. The hymn says that this is done for long life, for what one wishes for, and for wealth (āyuḥ, kāma, artha). The 1904 printing reads "bhaktyā vyāsaḥ" here: "Vyasa should remember him every day with devotion". The 1905 printing and most printings today read "bhaktāvāsaṃ", shown here.

The verse closes with the call "prabho", "O Lord". The 1905 printing has "param", "supreme", in its place.

हिंदी अर्थ श्लोक कहता है कि जो मनुष्य इन बारह नामों का दिन की तीनों संध्याओं (सुबह, दोपहर और शाम) में पाठ करता है, उसे विघ्नों का भय नहीं रहता, और यह पाठ हर तरह की सिद्धि देता है। श्लोक "प्रभो", यानी "हे प्रभु", संबोधन से समाप्त होता है। 1905 की छपाई में इसकी जगह "परम्" ("श्रेष्ठ") है।

Our explanation The hymn says that one who writes it out and gives it to eight brahmins gains all learning, by the grace of Ganesha. In the tradition, copying a hymn and giving it away was a way of spreading it.

हिंदी अर्थ श्लोक कहता है कि जो इसे लिखकर आठ ब्राह्मणों को देता है, उसे गणेश की कृपा से सारी विद्या मिलती है। परंपरा में किसी स्तोत्र को लिखकर दूसरों को देना उसे फैलाने का एक तरीका था।

About the Sankashtanashana Ganesha Stotram

The hymn opens with "Narada said". It asks the reader to bow to Ganesha, the son of Gauri (Parvati), and then lists his twelve names: Vakratunda, Ekadanta, Krishnapingaksha, Gajavaktra, Lambodara, Vikata, Vighnaraja, Dhumravarna, Bhalachandra, Vinayaka, Ganapati and Gajanana. The last four verses are the hymn's own words about what reciting it brings (its phala-shruti); they are marked as such, and the explanations say "the hymn says". The printings close it with the words "from the Narada Purana".

The text here is read from a Bombay anthology of Sanskrit hymns printed in 1904. One word follows a second Bombay anthology printed in 1905: verse 1 "bhaktāvāsaṃ" ("the dwelling place of his devotees"), where the 1904 printing has "bhaktyā vyāsaḥ" ("Vyasa, with devotion"). Two words follow the wording that books print today, checked against two present-day publishers: "gajavaktraṃ" ("elephant-faced") in verse 2, where both old printings have "gajavakraṃ", and "aṣṭabhyo" in verse 8, where the 1904 printing has "aṣṭābhyo" (another correct form of the same word). Verse 5 ends with "prabho" ("O Lord"), as in the 1904 printing and in a present-day printing; the 1905 printing has "param" ("supreme"). Every other reading is shown under its verse.

Under each verse, a word-by-word list gives every word of the verse with a short meaning in English and Hindi, and its entry in Monier-Williams' Sanskrit-English Dictionary (1899), with the page and column, so the meaning can be checked in the printed book.

How to say it

The 1904 printing writes a nasal before a consonant as a dot (anusvāra, ं), as Bombay printings of the time did, so the IAST line shows vakratuṃḍaṃ, ekadaṃtaṃ and laṃbodaraṃ. In recitation the dot is said as the nasal of the next consonant's group: vakratuṇḍaṃ, ekadantaṃ, lambodaraṃ. A final "ṃ" before a pause is said "m". Each verse is an anuṣṭubh: four quarters of eight syllables, recited in two lines.
