Shubh muhurat: windows for samskaras, by city

A muhurat is a span of time that a printed rule allows for a rite. A samskara is one of the Hindu rites of passage, from a baby’s naming to a wedding. Shubh muhurat windows for a wedding (vivah), entering a new home (griha pravesh), mundan, naming and other samskaras. Choose the rite, your city and the dates: the tool lists every span of time that meets the printed rule, and names the rule, the tradition and the city.

These windows come from the printed rules, computed for your city. Your family priest's choice comes first: many families ask their own priest, who also reads the birth charts and the family's custom.

Everything is calculated in this browser. The dates you type, and a child's birth date, are not sent anywhere, not saved and not counted.

Words on this page

Muhurat (muhurta)
A span of time that a printed rule allows for a rite. As a unit, a fifteenth of the daytime or of the night: about 48 minutes.
Tithi
A lunar day: the time the Moon takes to gain 12 degrees on the Sun. A lunar month has 30 tithis.
Nakshatra
One of 27 equal parts of the sky along the Moon's path, each 13°20′ wide and named after a group of stars.
Abhijit muhurat
The 8th of the 15 muhurtas of the daytime, the one around local noon. Many panchangs do not use Abhijit on Wednesdays.

How the windows are found

For each day from sunrise to the next sunrise, the tool takes the tithi, nakshatra, yoga and karana and the times they change, the weekday, the lunar month and the Sun's sign, all from the same calendar engine as the panchang pages, computed for your city.

It keeps only the spans where every condition of the verse holds at the same time, and leaves out the general faults the text names for every rite. A span shorter than one ghatika (24 minutes) is not listed.

Some conditions need the family's own birth details, such as the lagna, tara and chandra bala. The tool does not ask for them; each result lists them for your priest.

The rules of the Muhurtacintamani of Rama Daivajna (Kashi, 1600 CE), the muhurta handbook most used in North and West India, with the Piyushadhara commentary of his nephew Govinda. Lunar months are counted new moon to new moon (amanta), as the text does; the Sun's sign is sidereal (Lahiri).

The rules, rite by rite

Each rule below is read from the 1907 Nirnaya Sagar printing of the Muhurtacintamani, page by page on the archive.org scan. The verse number and page are given, so anyone can check them.

Namakarana (naming)

MC 5.11: on the 11th or 12th day, on a tithi that is not a parva (8, 14, Purnima, Amavasya, a sankranti) and not rikta (4, 9, 14), on the day of a benefic planet (Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday), in a mridu, dhruva, kshipra or chara nakshatra.

When: The 11th or 12th day after birth. When that time has passed, the commentary (quoting Kashyapa) asks for a good day in uttarayana with Jupiter and Venus not set, not "young" and not "old"; the tool then checks these too.

The commentary quotes Brihaspati: the forenoon is best, midday is middling, and the afternoon and night are left out. The windows here end when the afternoon (aparahna) begins.

What this rite is, and what each tradition says

Annaprashana (first rice)

MC 5.17: leave out the rikta tithis (4, 9, 14), the nanda tithis (1, 6, 11), the 8th, the 12th and Amavasya; leave out Saturday, Tuesday and Sunday; use a sthira, mridu, laghu or chara nakshatra; for a boy the 6th, 8th, 10th or 12th month, for a girl the 5th, 7th, 9th or 11th.

When: Months counted from birth: a boy in the 6th, 8th, 10th or 12th month, a girl in the 5th, 7th, 9th or 11th. At this set time the commentary does not ask about the setting of Jupiter and Venus.

The commentary quotes Narada: the bright half (shukla paksha) and the forenoon. The windows here are in the forenoon; a window in the dark half is marked.

What this rite is, and what each tradition says

Mundan (chudakarana, the first haircut)

MC 5.29: in the 3rd year or a later odd year; not on the 8th, the 12th, a rikta tithi (4, 9, 14), the 1st, the 6th or a parva (8, 14, Purnima, Amavasya, a sankranti); not in Chaitra; in uttarayana; on a Monday, Wednesday, Thursday or Friday; in a mridu, chara or laghu nakshatra or Jyeshtha, but not Anuradha.

When: The 3rd year, or the 5th or 7th (counted from conception or from birth), "by the custom of one's own family" (Vasishtha, quoted in the commentary).

What this rite is, and what each tradition says

Vidyarambha (akshararambha, the first letters)

MC 5.37: in the 5th year, after worship of Ganesha, Vishnu, Sarasvati and Lakshmi; on the 11th, 12th, 10th, 2nd, 6th, 5th or 3rd tithi; with the Sun in uttarayana; in Hasta, Ashwini, Pushya, Shravana, Swati, Revati, Punarvasu, Ardra, Chitra or Anuradha; on a Monday, Wednesday, Thursday or Friday.

When: The 5th year of the child.

The commentary quotes Markandeya, who also leaves out the 6th tithi; the verse itself allows it.

Many families choose Vijayadashami instead; that is a custom outside this verse, and the family priest decides.

What this rite is, and what each tradition says

Upanayana (the sacred thread)

MC 5.40: in a kshipra, dhruva, chara, mridu nakshatra, Ashlesha, Mula, the three Purvas or Ardra; on a Sunday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday or Monday; on the 2nd, 3rd, 5th, 11th, 12th or 10th tithi, in the dark half only in its first third; not in the afternoon. The commentary and MC 5.26 require uttarayana.

When: MC 5.39 gives the age by family tradition (for example the 8th year from conception). Choose the date range with the family priest.

What this rite is, and what each tradition says

Vivaha (wedding)

MC 6.13: with the Sun in Mesha, Vrishabha, Mithuna, Vrishchika, Makara or Kumbha; with the Sun in Mithuna only in Ashadha up to shukla Dashami, and not while Vishnu sleeps (Hari-shayana). MC 6.53: in Mrigashira, Hasta, Mula, Anuradha, Magha, Rohini, Revati, the three Uttaras or Swati; on a tithi that is not rikta (4, 9, 14) or Amavasya; on the day of a benefic planet.

When: Any date range the family chooses.

The commentary quotes Vasishtha: Sunday and Saturday are middling and Tuesday is always left out; it also quotes Narada, for whom the lunar months Magha, Phalguna, Vaishakha and Jyeshtha are best. This tool keeps to the verse (Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday).

What this rite is, and what each tradition says

Griha pravesh (new house)

MC 13.1: entering a new house in uttarayana, in the lunar months Jyeshtha, Magha, Phalguna or Vaishakha, in a mridu or dhruva nakshatra. MC 13.4: not on a Sunday or Tuesday, not on a rikta tithi (4, 9, 14) or Amavasya, not in Chaitra.

When: Any date range the family chooses.

For an old house, or one rebuilt after fire or flood, MC 13.2 has its own rule: choose "old or rebuilt house".

MC 13.1 also gives this rule for coming home from a journey. There Vasishtha (in the commentary) skips the Jupiter and Venus check and Narada keeps it; this tool keeps it.

What this rite is, and what each tradition says

Griha pravesh (old or rebuilt house)

MC 13.2: for an old house (one built by others), or a house rebuilt after fire, flood or the like, the months of 13.1 (Jyeshtha, Magha, Phalguna, Vaishakha) and also Margashirsha, Kartika and Shravana, so uttarayana is not needed; a mridu or dhruva nakshatra, or Shatabhisha, Pushya, Swati or Dhanishtha; the setting of Jupiter and Venus need not be checked. MC 13.4: not on a Sunday or Tuesday, not on a rikta tithi (4, 9, 14) or Amavasya, not in Chaitra.

When: Any date range the family chooses.

The commentary: even here the day's panchang must be clean and the nakshatra one the verse names, and the worship of the house (vastu puja) is done as for a new house.

Questions

Why might the family priest give a different date?

Families follow different texts and regional customs, and a priest also reads the lagna and the birth charts, which this tool does not. The text itself allows some faults to be set aside in need. That is why the family priest's choice comes first.

Why are there no wedding dates from July to early November?

The verse allows weddings only with the Sun in six signs, and the commentary leaves out the four months when Vishnu sleeps, from Ashadha shukla Ekadashi to Kartika shukla Ekadashi (Devuthani Ekadashi).

What does "Jupiter or Venus set" mean here?

When Jupiter or Venus is too close to the Sun to be seen, the text calls it set (asta). For a few days around that it is called young or old. The text does not hold weddings, the sacred thread, mundan or griha pravesh into a new house in those days. For an old or rebuilt house it does not ask about them (MC 13.2).

Is the griha pravesh rule different for an old house?

Yes. For a house built by others, or one rebuilt after fire or flood, MC 13.2 also allows Shravana, Kartika and Margashirsha and the nakshatras Shatabhisha, Pushya, Swati and Dhanishtha, and it does not ask about Jupiter and Venus. Choose "Griha pravesh (old or rebuilt house)" in the list of rites. A house that was lived in before is an old house in this sense.

Is there a muhurat for antyeshti or shraddha?

This tool gives no muhurat for antyeshti (the last rites) or for shraddha. These follow the day of the passing and the family's custom, and local rules for cremation; the family priest guides them.

Sources

These windows come from the printed rules, computed for your city. Your family priest's choice comes first: many families ask their own priest, who also reads the birth charts and the family's custom.
