The rule
Begins with Ghatasthapana on the day Ashwin Shukla Pratipada prevails in the first third of the daytime (if two days have it, the day Pratipada holds sunrise: a Pratipada joined with Amavasya is not taken), and runs day by day to the day Navami prevails at sunrise. Maha Navami, for the puja and the fast, is the Navami joined with Ashtami when it begins by the evening (sayahna) of the Ashtami day, else that same day (Dharmasindhu, Nirnayasindhu). Tithis that repeat or are lost make Navratri 8 to 10 days long.
