Mahishasura Mardini Stotram: Lyrics and Meaning
Traditionally attributed to Adi Shankaracharya
The Mahishasura Mardini Stotram ("hymn to the slayer of Mahishasura") is a Sanskrit hymn to the Goddess Durga, best known by its first words, "Ayi giri nandini", "O daughter of the mountain". Every verse ends with the refrain "jaya jaya he mahiṣāsuramardini ramyakapardini śailasute": "victory, victory to you, slayer of the buffalo demon Mahisha, you of the lovely braided hair, daughter of the mountain". Many Hindu families recite or sing it on Fridays, during Navratri and at Durga Puja.

Our explanation The hymn calls the Goddess daughter of the mountain (Parvati), who gladdens the earth, who delights the whole world, and who is praised by Nandi. She lives on the peak of the Vindhya, the best of mountains; she is the delight of Vishnu and is praised by Indra (Jishnu). She is the wife of the blue-throated Shiva, mother of a great household, maker of all beings. The refrain hails her: "victory, victory to you, slayer of the demon Mahisha, you of the lovely braided hair, daughter of the mountain". The 1917 printing reads "nanditamodini" ("who gladdens the joyful") for "nanditamedini". For "bhūtakṛte" ("maker of beings"), the 1917 reading, present-day printings differ among themselves ("bhūtikṛte", "who gives prosperity"; "bhūrikṛte", "who does much").

Our explanation She showers boons on the gods, overpowers those no one can overpower, bears with Durmukha (a demon's name, "the foul-mouthed"), and delights in joy. She nourishes the three worlds, pleases Shiva (Shankara), takes away sin, and delights in the sound of praise. She is angry with the demons and with the arrogant, dries up their pride, and is the daughter of the ocean, a name of Lakshmi.

Our explanation With nothing more than her "hum!" she destroyed Dhumralochana ("smoke-eyed") and his hundreds. In battle she dried up the creeper of blood-seeds born from the blood of Raktabija ("blood-seed"), whose every drop of blood became a new demon. She delights in the spirits and goblins who were fed in the great battle with Shumbha and Nishumbha. These are the battles told in the Devi Mahatmyam. The 1917 printing reads "huṃkṛta" for "huṃkṛti" (the same sense), and "darpita … pate", "leader of the spirits and goblins who were made proud", for "tarpita … rate".

Our explanation She cut the headless trunks of the demons into a hundred pieces and struck off the trunks of their lordly elephants. Her lion, king of beasts, is fierce and mighty in splitting the temples of the enemy's elephants. With the rod of her own arm she struck down Chanda and tore apart Bhanda, the chief of the demon warriors (Bhanda is a demon's name). Today's printings read "muṇḍa" here, the demon Munda, but they print it in compounds that differ in other words, so the 1917 reading is shown.

Our explanation As she draws her bow again and again in the moment of battle, the bracelets dance on her moving limbs. She shines in tawny gold at the waist, and strikes down the demon fighters. On the battlefield where the four parts of an army (chariots, elephants, horses and foot soldiers) clash, the many drums and cries resound. The second and third lines are hard to divide into words as printed, and printings differ here; this is the main sense. The 1917 printing reads "raṇat" ("ringing") for "naṭat" ("dancing"); today's printings also read "pṛṣatka-niṣaṅga-rasad-bhaṭa" ("arrows, quiver, roaring warriors") and "baṭuke" ("young fighters"), in compounds that differ in other words.

Our explanation She holds the great, irresistible power that is ready to kill enemies drunk with battle. She made the lord of the Pramathas, Shiva, wise and skilled in counsel, her messenger to the demons (as the Devi Mahatmyam tells, where she is called Shivaduti). She is beyond the reach of the evil, scheming, arrogant demon's messenger. Today's printings read "durmati" ("wicked-minded") for "durmada" ("arrogant"), in compounds that differ in other words.

Our explanation Her hand gives freedom from fear and boons even to the wives of the enemy heroes when they come to her for refuge. Her hand holds the spotless trident that strikes the heads of those who trouble the three worlds. The sound of the gods' drums, "dhimi dhimi", fills every direction again and again. Today's Gita Press text writes the drum sound "dumi dumi".

Our explanation She delights in the dance of the heavenly women, full of gesture, to the beat "tata theyi theyi thā". She delights in song and in the play of rhythms called out as "kukutha kukutha gaḍadā". She delights in the deep sound of the mridanga drum, "dhudhukuṭa dhuḥkuṭa dhimi dhimi". The syllables are the spoken beats of dance and drum. The 1917 printing has "tata tho tata tho tata the" for the first beat.

Our explanation The whole world praises her, eager to call out "victory, victory". The jingle of her anklets, "jhaṇa jhaṇa jhiṃjhimi", charms Shiva, the lord of beings. She delights in the dance-drama danced by the lord of dancers, Shiva, as the one who is half man and half woman (Ardhanarishvara).

Our explanation The verse repeats one word with changing sense. She has a lovely radiance that delights the gods and the good-hearted, like flowers (sumanas means "flower", "god" and "kind-minded"). She is surrounded by those whose faces are like the moon, the maker of night (rajanīkara). Her beautiful eyes move as restlessly as black bees. Many divisions of these words are possible; this is the main sense.

Our explanation She walks with the slow grace of a royal elephant. She is the daughter of the king of the ocean, whose beauty is like the moon, the ornament of the three worlds (a name of Lakshmi, who rose from the ocean with the moon). She is the king's daughter who, like Kama (Manmatha), the god of love, stirs the eager hearts of lovely women; the words can be read in more than one way. The 1917 printing reads "rājamate", "honoured by Kama, the king", for "rājasute".

Our explanation Her forehead has a matchless soft radiance, spotless as a lotus petal. She is the home of every art and grace, and flocks of swans move at play around her. Her hair, dark as a swarm of bees, is crowned with bakula flowers, and bees cluster on them. Today's printings read "kāntikalākalitāmala" in the first line, where the forehead bears the crescent of the moon; the 1917 printing reads "kalat" for "calat" ("moving") in the second.

Our explanation Her sweet voice, like the soft sound of the flute, puts the cuckoo's song to shame. She goes to the mountain groves made lovely by the humming of bees. She delights in the play of her own attendants, the great Shabari (huntress) women, who gather with her. Today's printings read "kara" ("hand") for "kala" ("soft"): the flute in her hand.

Our explanation The yellow silk at her waist, bright with many colours like a peacock, outshines the moon. The gems in the crowns of the gods and demons who bow to her throw their light on her, and her toenails shine like moons. Her bosom is compared to the high peaks of the golden mountain, Meru, from which streams fall. Today's printings read "mayūkha" ("ray") for "mayūra" ("peacock") in the first line: the many-coloured rays of the silk.

Our explanation She outshines the thousand-rayed sun, and is praised by the sun and by the thousand-armed. She is praised by Skanda, the son (of Shiva) who fought the gods' war against the demon Taraka. She delights in the prayers (japa) made in meditation by King Suratha and the merchant Samadhi, who meditated on her with equal devotion; their story frames the Devi Mahatmyam. The printing reads "samādhiṣu" ("in meditations"); today's Gita Press text has "samādhi sujāpya" ("prayers well said").

Our explanation The hymn says: O home of compassion, O gracious one, whoever worships your lotus feet every day, O Kamala (Lakshmi), who lives in the lotus, how could that person not become a home of Lakshmi, of good fortune? Your feet alone are the highest place. The singer, as one devoted to them, asks why this should not be granted to him too.

Our explanation The singer prays to Uma: "Out of your kindness to the humble, you yourself should be gracious to me. You are known as the mother of the world, O Rama (Lakshmi). Whatever is fitting here, may you take it up, and take away my great suffering." The middle line can be divided into words in more than one way as printed, and present-day printings read it differently. The 1917 printing reads "tayā" for "tvayā" ("by you") in the first line, and "na yad ucitaṃ na" ("what is not fitting … not") for "yad ucitam atra" in the third.

IAST
stutimitaḥstimitaḥ susamādhinā niyamatoyamatonudinaṃ paṭhet ||paramayā ramayāsaniṣevyate parijanorijanopi ca taṃ bhajet ||
Our explanation The hymn says that whoever recites this praise every day, calm and well composed, keeping the rules and self-control, is served by Rama (Lakshmi), the supreme, and that his own people and even his enemies serve him. Some printings today begin "stutim imāṃ" ("this praise"), where this printing has "stutim itaḥ". The 1917 printing reads "niyamito 'yam ito" ("self-disciplined, this person, from now on") for "niyamato yamato".

About the Mahishasura Mardini Stotram
The hymn praises the Goddess as Parvati, the daughter of the Himalaya, and as the warrior who defeated Mahisha and the other demons told of in the Devi Mahatmyam: Dhumralochana, Raktabija, Chanda and Munda, Shumbha and Nishumbha. Its verses are built on sound: words repeat with small changes ("sumanaḥ sumanaḥ sumanaḥ"), and drum and dance syllables ("dhimi dhimi", "jhaṇa jhaṇa") imitate the music of her festival. Many lines can be split into words in more than one way, so the explanations give the main sense of each verse and do not claim to settle every word.
Many families ascribe the hymn to Adi Shankaracharya. No printing of the hymn from 1930 or earlier that was read names him, but two catalogues of manuscripts printed in Madras in 1913 and 1915 describe old copies that close with his name. The attribution is shown as traditional.
The text here is read from a Bombay booklet printed in Samvat 1974 (1917), where the hymn is verses 7 to 28 of a longer "Devi Pushpanjali Stotra" (its first six verses are other praise verses and are not shown). It has 21 verses and a closing verse about reciting it, 22 in all. The booklet adds one more verse that names a poet, Ramakrishna; it is not in the manuscripts and is not shown. The verses follow the 1917 order, which some printings today change in a few places. In 13 lines the words follow the wording that books print today, checked against two present-day publishers, where the 1917 booklet differs; the 1917 words are shown under each verse, and so are the words of a 1913 Madras printing of six of the verses where it differs.
Under each verse, a word-by-word list gives every word of the verse with a short meaning in English and Hindi, and its entry in Monier-Williams' Sanskrit-English Dictionary (1899), with the page and column, so the meaning can be checked in the printed book.
How to say it
The 1917 printing writes a nasal before a consonant as a dot (anusvāra, ं), as Bombay printings of the time did, so the IAST line shows naṃdini and kuṭuṃbini. In recitation the dot is said as the nasal of the next consonant's group: nandini, kuṭumbini. Every verse is in a fast, even beat of short and long syllables, four long lines to a verse; the fourth line is the refrain. The printing writes the refrain in full only after verse 1; after the other verses it prints a short cue ("jayajaya he mahiṣā°", "he mahi°", "he°"), which means "sing the whole refrain again".
