Jai Ambe Gauri Aarti: Lyrics and Meaning

Traditional

Jai Ambe Gauri is an aarti to the Goddess, sung while a lamp is waved before her. It praises her as Ambe ("Mother"), as Gauri ("the fair one", a name of Parvati) and as Shyama ("the dark one"). It describes her form, her lion, the demons she defeated and the music of her worship. Many Hindu families sing it every day during Navratri, and at the close of any puja to Durga.

How to read these English letters (IAST)

Our explanation The refrain hails the Goddess as Ambe ("Mother"), as Gauri ("the fair one", a name of Parvati) and as Shyama ("the dark one"), and calls her maiyā, "mother". It says that Hari (Vishnu), Brahma and Shiva meditate on her day and night. The last word, śivarī, is read as "Shiva" with rī, a word used to address a woman ("O Mother"). The printings name the gods in different ways. The 1921 printing that this text is based on has "hara" (a name of Shiva) for "hari". The 1913 and 1914 printings have "brahmā śiva saurī / śaurī": Brahma, Shiva and Shauri, a name of Vishnu as Krishna.

How to read these English letters (IAST)

Our explanation She tore apart the demons Shumbha and Nishumbha, and she is the slayer of Mahishasura, as the Devi Mahatmya tells. The second line is read in two ways. Dhumralochana ("smoke-eyed") is a demon she defeated, and her eyes are read as the eyes that ended him. Others read the words as a picture of her eyes, dark as smoke, always full of joy (madamātī). The 1913 printing has "dhūmra vilocana nāśati", "she destroys Dhumralochana".

How to read these English letters (IAST)

Our explanation On a golden plate rests the lamp, with agar (a fragrant wood) and a camphor wick. The second line is read in more than one way. Many read "śrī mālaketu" as the name of the Goddess's place or shrine, where a light like that of countless (koṭi) jewels shines. The 1921 printing that this text is based on has "mālaketa" and "koṭaratna", which some read as the jewels of a fort or palace (koṭ). The 1913 printing has a different picture: "in Malketu the tongue (of flame) flickers".

Jai Ambe Gauri Aarti

Shri Kali Namamrit, 1921. Use the arrows, the arrow keys or a presentation remote to move on.

About the Jai Ambe Gauri Aarti

The aarti is traditional. Its last stanza names a Swami as the singer: Shivanand Swami in this text and in most printings today, Sadanand Swami in a 1913 printing. Nothing more is known about him.

The text here is based on a Calcutta collection of hymns to Kali printed in 1920–21 (Samvat 1977). Where that printing differs from the words families sing today, the page shows today's words, checked against three present-day texts from three publishers: "hari brahmā śivarī" in the refrain, "vara mudrā" ("the boon-giving gesture") in stanza 7, and "kapūr", "śrī mālaketu meṃ" and "koṭi ratan" in stanza 8. Two words of the refrain ("maiyā jay śyāmā gaurī"), "nṛtya" ("dance", stanza 6) and the plain spelling "śumbha" (stanza 5) come from 1913 and 1914 printings. Each older word is listed under its stanza. Present-day books also add three stanzas. They are not in the 1921 printing we follow, so they are not part of the text shown here; the notes under stanzas 5 and 6 say where they come in.

How to say it

Sung Hindi drops the final short "a" (Ambe Gaurī, jay, not jaya), though the IAST line writes every vowel as spelled. "khaṅga" is the printed spelling of khaḍga, "sword", and is usually sung "khaḍag"; "khapra" is a short spelling of khappar, "bowl", and is sung "khappar". "jay ambe°" after each stanza is the printed cue to sing the refrain again.
