ENThe poet bows to Rama, the lord of the world. He calls him peaceful, eternal, beyond measure and without sin; the giver of the peace of nirvana (final freedom); the one whom Brahma, Shambhu (Shiva) and the serpent king (Shesha) serve at all times; the one known through the Vedanta; all-pervading; the teacher of the gods; Hari, who took a human form through his own power (maya); the source of compassion; the best of Raghu's line; and the crown jewel of kings.

ENA prayer to Rama (Raghupati). The speaker says that there is no other desire in his heart, that he speaks the truth, and that Rama is the inner self of all beings. He asks Rama, the best of Raghu's line, for full devotion (bhakti), and asks him to make his mind free of desire and the other faults.

ENThe poet bows to Hanuman, the son of the Wind. He calls him the home of matchless strength, with a body that shines like a mountain of gold; a fire to the forest of the demons; the first among the wise; the store of all virtues; the lord of the monkeys; and Rama's chosen messenger.

I reverence the home of immeasurable strength, with his body resembling a mountain of gold; the fire that consumed the demons as it were the trees of a forest; the first name in the list of the truly wise: the store-house of all good qualities; the monkey chief; Raghupati’s noble messenger, the Son of the Wind.

ENHanuman is glad to hear Jambavan's words. He asks the other monkeys to wait for him and bear the hardship, living on roots and fruit, until he comes back after seeing Sita; he says his heart is glad because the task will succeed. He bows to them all and sets out with Rama (Raghunath) in his heart. On the shore there is a fine mountain, and he jumps up on it. Calling Rama to mind again and again, the son of the Wind leaps with all his strength. The mountain he pushes off from sinks at once into the underworld (patal). He flies on like Rama's arrow, which never misses. The Ocean sees that he is Rama's messenger and asks the mountain Mainak to let him rest.

On hearing Jámbaván speak so cheerfully, Hanumán was greatly rejoiced at heart. “Wait for me here, my friends, however great your discomfort, with only roots, herbs, and fruits for your food, till I return after seeing Síta; the task is one I am most pleased to undertake.” So saying he bowed his head to them all and went forth with joy, having the image of Raghunáth impressed upon his heart. There was a majestic rock by the seashore; he lightly sprung on to the top of it; then, again and again invoking Raghubír, the Son of the Wind leaped with all his might. The mountain on which he had planted his foot sank down immediately into the depths of hell. Like Ráma’s own unerring shaft, so sped Hanumán on his way. Ocean had regard for Ramá’s envoy and told Maináka to ease his toil.1

ENThe gods see the son of the Wind on his way and want to know how great his strength and wisdom are. They send Surasa, the mother of the serpents. She says that the gods have given her a meal today. Hanuman answers that he will first do Rama's work and bring the Lord news of Sita; then he will come back and enter her mouth. He asks her, as a mother, to let him go. She will not, so he tells her to try to swallow him. She opens her mouth one yojana wide (a yojana is a long measure of distance), and he makes his body twice as big. She makes it sixteen yojanas, and he becomes thirty-two. Each time she widens her mouth, he shows a form twice as large. When she opens it a hundred yojanas, he takes a very small form, goes into her mouth, comes out again, bows his head and asks leave to go. Surasa says that she has now seen the depth of his wisdom and strength, which is what the gods sent her to learn.

The gods saw Hanumán on his way and wished to make special trial of his strength and sagacity. So they sent the mother of the serpent-race, Surasá by name, who came and cried: “To-day the gods have provided me a meal.’ On hearing these words, the Son of the Wind replied: “When I have performed Ráma’s commission and have come back, and have given my lord the news about Síta, then I will put myself into your mouth: I tell you the truth, mother, only let me go now.” But, however much he tried, she would not let him go, till at last he said: ‘You cannot get me into your mouth.’ She opened her jaws a league wide; the monkey made his body twice that size. Then she stretched her mouth sixteen leagues. Hanuman at once became thirty-two. However much Surasá expanded her jaws, the monkey made his frame twice as large again. When she had made her mouth a hundred leagues wide, he reduced himself to a very minute form and went into her mouth and came out again: then bowed and asked permission to proceed. “The purpose for which the gods sent me, namely, to make trial of your wisdom and strength, I have now accomplished.

ENA demoness lives in the sea. By magic she catches the birds of the sky: she seizes the shadow that a flying creature casts on the water, and then it cannot fly away. In this way she always has birds to eat. She tries the same trick on Hanuman, but he sees through it at once, kills her and crosses the sea with a steady mind. On the far shore he sees the beauty of the forest, with bees humming in search of honey, many trees with fruit and flowers, and flocks of birds and herds of deer. He sees a great mountain ahead and runs up it without fear. Here Shiva says to Uma (Parvati) that this is not the monkey's own greatness: it is the power of the Lord, who devours even Death (Kala). From the mountain top Hanuman sees Lanka, a fortress beyond words, very high, with the sea on every side and a shining wall of gold.

A female demon1 dwelt in the ocean, who by magic caught the birds of the air. All living creatures that fly in the air as they look down upon the water cast a shadow upon it; and she was able to catch the shadow, so that they could not fly away; and in this manner she always had birds to eat. She played this name trick on Hanumán; but the monkey at once saw through her craft and slew her, hero as he was, and all undismayed crossed over to the opposite shore. Arriving there, he marked the beauty of the wood, with the bees buzzing in their search for honey, the diverse trees all resplendent with simultaneous flower and fruit, and multitudes of birds and deer delightful to behold. Seeing a huge rock further on, he fearlessly sprang on to the top of it. But, Uma, this was not at all the monkey’s own strength, but the gift of the Lord, who devours even Death himself. Mounted on the height, he surveyed Lanká a magnificent fortress that defies description, with the deep sea on all four sides around its golden walls of dazzling splendour.

ENHanuman takes a form as small as a mosquito (masak; Growse has “gnat”) and goes toward Lanka, remembering Narahari (Vishnu). A demoness named Lankini stops him. She asks whether he means to slip past her, and says that he does not know her secret: every thief here is her food. With one blow of his fist the great monkey strikes her, and she staggers to the ground, vomiting blood. Lankini (here called Lanka) gets up again and, folding her hands in fear, speaks humbly. When Brahma gave Ravana his boon, she says, he gave her a sign as he left: when she is made helpless by a monkey's blow, she should know that the end of the demons has come. She says that her merit must be very great, since she has seen Rama's messenger with her own eyes.

Thereupon he assumed the form of a gnat1 and entered Lanká after invoking Vishnu.2 The female demon, by name Lankini, accosted him: “How dare you come here in contempt of me? Fool, do you not know my practice, that every thief in Lanká becomes my prey?” The monkey struck her one such a blow with his fist that she fell to the ground vomiting blood. Recovering herself again, she stood up and with clasped hands made this confident petition: “When Bráhma granted Rávan’s prayer, the Creator gave me a sign before he left, ‘When worsted by a monkey, know then that it is all over with the demons.’ My meritorious deeds, my son, must have been very many that I have been rewarded with the sight of Ráma’s messenger.

  1. The word masak, which I translate ‘gnat,’ never, so far as I am aware, bears any other meaning. But in one glossary, with reference to this particular passage, it is explained by bilar, ‘a cat,’ only—as it would seem—because that is the animal mentioned in the Sanskrit Rámáyana. In both cases the poet has no sooner stated the transformation than he forgets all about it; for all Hanumán’s subsequent actions are described as if performed by him in his natural shape. He may be supposed to have resumed it as soon as he had passed the guard; or the words may be taken to mean, “he made himself as small as a gnat.” This latter view is confirmed by what follows on page 35, Vol. III. ↩
  2. Nara-hari stands for the more common Nar-sinha—hari and sinha both meaning ‘a lion’—and here denotes not that particular incarnation, but Vishnu generally. ↩

ENLankini says: put the joy of heaven and the joy of final freedom (apavarga) together in one pan of a scale; they still do not equal the joy of a single moment (lav) of satsang, the company of the good.

In one scale of the balance put the bliss of heaven and the final emancipation of the soul from the body, but it will be altogether outweighed by a fraction of the joy that results from communion with the saints.

ENLankini tells Hanuman to enter the city and do all his work, keeping the king of Kosala (Rama) in his heart. For the one on whom Rama looks with kindness, she says, poison becomes nectar, an enemy becomes a friend, the ocean becomes as small as a cow's hoofprint, fire turns cool, and Mount Sumeru becomes like a grain of dust. (In this line the narrator calls his listener by name, "O Garuda": it is the crow Bhushundi telling the story to Garuda. The 1922 printing reads garua, "heavy", here.) Hanuman takes a very small form and enters the city, remembering the Lord. He searches every palace and sees countless warriors everywhere. He goes into Ravana's palace, which is wonderful beyond words, and sees Ravana asleep, but he does not see Vaidehi (Sita) in that palace. Then he sees a beautiful house, with a temple of Hari built apart in it.

Enter the city and accomplish your task, ever mindful at heart of the lord of Kosala. Deadly poison becomes as ambrosia, foes turn friends, ocean shrinks to a mere puddle, fire gives out cold and huge Sumeru is of no more account than a grain of sand for him whom Ráma deigns to regard with favour.” In the tiny form that he had assumed, Hanumán entered the city with a prayer to God. Carefully inspecting every separate palace, he found everywhere warriors innumerable. When he had come to Rávan’s court, its magnificence was past all telling. The monkey saw him in bed asleep, but no trace of Síta in the room. He then noticed another splendid building, with a temple of Hari standing apart, its walls brilliantly illuminated with Ráma’s name, too beautiful to describe, it fascinated every beholder.

ENHanuman wonders how a good person can live here, in Lanka, the home of crowds of demons. As he thinks this, Vibhishan wakes up and repeats the name “Rama, Rama”. Hanuman is glad at heart and knows that this is a good man. He decides to make himself known, because no harm to his task can come from a good man. He takes the form of a Brahmin and calls out. Vibhishan hears him, gets up and comes to him. He bows, asks after his welfare and asks him to tell his own story. He asks whether he is one of Hari's servants, since his own heart feels great love; or whether he is Rama himself, who loves the humble, come to bless him. (Growse reads the last question as “a loving follower of Rama”.)

“Lanká is the abode of a gang of demons, how can the pious have any home here?” While the monkey was thus reasoning within himself, Vibhíshan awoke and at once began to repeat Ráma’s name in prayer. The monkey was delighted to find a true believer. “Shall I at once make myself known to him? A good man will never spoil any undertaking.” Assuming the form of a Bráhman, he raised his voice in speech. As soon as Vibhíshan heard him, he rose to meet him, and bowing low, asked after his welfare, saying, “Tell me, reverend Sir, who you may be; if a servant of Hari, you have my hearty affection; if a loving follower of Ráma, your visit is a great honour for me.”

ENVibhishan tells the son of the Wind how he lives: like the tongue among the teeth. He asks whether the lord of the Sun dynasty will ever be kind to him, knowing that he has no protector. His body is born of tamas (darkness), he has no spiritual practice, and his mind has no love for the Lord's lotus feet. But now he has hope, because no one meets saints without Hari's grace. Since Raghubir (Rama) has been kind, Hanuman has come to him of his own will. Hanuman answers: the Lord's way is to love his servants always. He asks what high family he himself comes from: he is a restless monkey, lowly in every way, and whoever speaks the name of a monkey at dawn gets no food that day (a saying of the time).

“Hearken, Son of the Wind; my condition here is like that of the poor tongue between the teeth. Yet do not suppose, Father, that I am friendless: the Lord of the Solar race will show me favour. The sinful body is of no avail, if the soul has no love for his lotus feet. But now, Hanumán, I have gained confidence: for it is only by Hari’s favour that one meets a good man, and it is the result of his kindness that you have so readily revealed yourself to me.” “Listen, Vibhíshan, to my experience of the Lord; he is ever affectionate to his servants. ENHanuman asks why those who know such a master, and still forget him and wander away, should not be unhappy. Talking in this way of Rama's many virtues, the two find a peace beyond words. Then Vibhishan tells him all about how Janaka's daughter (Sita) lives there. Hanuman says he wants to see Mother Janaki. Vibhishan tells him every step of the plan, and the son of the Wind takes his leave. Taking the same small form again, he goes to the Ashoka grove where Sita lives. On seeing her he bows to her in his mind. She sits there as the watches of the night pass. Her body is thin, her hair is matted in a single braid, and in her heart she repeats the list of Rama's (Raghupati's) virtues.

“I know of a truth that any who turns aside in forgetfulness of such a lord may well be miserable.” As he thus discoursed on Ráma’s excellences, he felt an unspeakable calm. Vibhíshan then told him of all that had been going on and of Síta’s mode of life, till Hanumán cried: “Hearken, brother; I would fain see the august Síta.” Vibhíshan explained to him the whole mode of procedure, and the Son of the Wind then took his leave and proceeded on his way. Assuming the same form as at first he went to the Asoka grove, where Síta dwelt. As soon as he saw her, mentally prostrated himself in her presence. She had spent the first watch of the night sitting up, haggard in appearance, her hair knotted in a single braid on her head,1 repeating to herself the list of Raghupati’s perfections.

  1. To twist the hair in a single braid is a sign of mouring for an absent husband. ↩

ENHanuman hides among the leaves of a tree and wonders what he should do. Just then Ravana comes there, with many women in fine dress. The wicked king tries in many ways to win Sita over, using the four means of persuasion: kind words, gifts, threats and division (sama, dana, bhaya, bheda). He tells her that he will make Mandodari and all his other queens her servants, and asks her to look at him just once. Sita puts a blade of grass between them, remembers her beloved lord of Ayodhya, and answers him. She asks whether a lotus ever opens in the light of a firefly. She tells Ravana to think about this, and asks whether he has no fear of Rama's arrows. She calls him shameless for carrying her off when no one was there. (Growse reads this line as “Even though absent, Hari will rescue me”.)

Ponder this at heart,” cried Jánaki: “Wretch, have you no fear of Ráma’s shafts? Even though absent, Hari will rescue me. Shameless monster, have you no shame?

ENRavana tells Sita that she has insulted him and that he will cut off her head with his hard sword. If she does not obey him at once, she will lose her life. Sita answers that the Lord's arms are beautiful like a garland of dark lotuses and strong like an elephant's trunk: either those arms will be at her neck, or his terrible sword. This, she says, is her firm vow. She speaks to his sword, Chandrahas: let it take away her pain, the fire of separation from Rama; its sharp blade is cool like the night, so let it take away the weight of her sorrow. Hearing this, Ravana rushes again to kill her, but Mandodari, the daughter of Maya, calms him with words of good counsel. He calls all the demonesses and tells them to go and frighten Sita in many ways. If she does not obey within a month, he says, he will draw his sword and kill her.

Hearken, wretch, to this my solemn vow. ENOne demoness, named Trijata, loves Rama's feet and is wise. She calls all the others and tells them a dream, and tells them to serve Sita for their own good. In her dream a monkey has burnt Lanka and killed the whole demon army. Ravana, the ten-headed one, rides naked on a donkey, his heads shaved and his twenty arms cut off. In this way he goes to the south (the direction of Yama, the god of death), and Vibhishan seems to have Lanka. Rama's name is proclaimed through the city, and then the Lord sends for Sita. Trijata says loudly that this dream will come true in four days. Hearing her, all the demonesses are afraid and fall at the feet of Janaka's daughter. The translator's footnote calls the custom of not facing a house door to the south a superstition; that is Growse's own view, in a translation printed in 1914 (he died in 1893). Many families still keep this custom when they build or choose a home.

One of them, by name Trijatá, was devoted to Ráma’s service, prudent and wise. She declared to them all a dream, how that they for their own sake ought to show Síta reverence. “In my dream a monkey set fire to Lanka, and put to death the whole demon army, and set Rávan on an ass, naked, with his head shorn and his twenty arms hacked off. In this fashion he went away towards the south,1 while Vibhíshan succeeded to the throne of Lanká. The city resounded with cries for mercy in Ráma’s name, till the Lord sent Síta among them. I deliberately warn you that four days hence this dream will be accomplished.” Upon hearing her words they were all dismayed and went and threw themselves at Síta’s feet,

  1. The realm of Yama, the god of Death, is supposed to be in the south. For this reason a Hindu will never, when it is possible to avoid it, have the door of his house in that direction. Muhammadans even, at the present day, are much influenced by the same superstition. ↩

ENSita folds her hands and speaks to Trijata. She calls her mother and her companion in trouble, and asks her to find a way quickly for her to give up her body, because the pain of separation is too great to bear. She asks her to bring wood, build a pyre and light it, and so make her love true; no one could bear to hear the words that pierce like a spear. Trijata takes hold of her feet, comforts her, and tells her of the Lord's might, strength and fame. She tells the gentle princess that no fire can be had at night, and goes back to her own house. Sita says that fate is against her: she can find no fire, and her pain will not end. She sees sparks of fire plain in the sky, but not one star comes down to the earth. The moon is made of fire, yet it drops no fire, as if it knows how unlucky she is. She asks the Ashoka tree to hear her prayer: its name means “without sorrow”, so let it make its name true and take her sorrow away. Its new leaves are like fire; let it give her fire. Seeing Sita so troubled by separation, Hanuman feels that one moment as long as an age (kalpa).

With clasped hands she cried to Trijatá: “Mother, you are my helper in distress; quickly devise some plan that I may be rid of life, for this intolerable bereavement is no longer to be endured. Bring wood and erect my funeral pyre and then set fire to it. My affection, reverend dame, will thus be attested.” Who could bear to listen to such an agonizing cry? When she heard her speech she clasped her feet and would fain comfort her by reciting the majesty and might and glory of her lord. “Hearken, fair lady; there is no fire to be had at night;” and so saying she went away home. Síta exclaimed: “Heaven is unkind; without fire my pain cannot be cured. I see the heaven all bright with sparks, but not a single star drops to the earth. The moon is all ablaze, but no fire comes from it, as if it knew what a poor wretch I am. Ye Asoka trees,1 that hear my prayer, answer to your name and rid me of my pain; and you flame-coloured opening buds, supply me with fire to consume my body.” A single moment seemed like an age to the monkey, as he beheld Síta thus piteously lamenting her bereavement.

ENThen Sita looks at the lovely ring, marked with Rama's name and very beautiful. She is amazed as she looks, recognises the ring, and her heart is torn between joy and sorrow. She thinks that no one can defeat Raghurai (Rama), who cannot be conquered, and that such a ring cannot be made by magic. As she turns many thoughts over in her mind, Hanuman speaks in a sweet voice. He begins to praise the virtues of Ramachandra, and as she listens her sorrow leaves her. She listens with her ears and her whole mind, and he tells the whole story from the beginning. Sita asks the one who has told this story, nectar to the ears, why he does not show himself. Then Hanuman comes near, and she turns and sits, her mind full of wonder. He tells Mother Janaki that he is Rama's messenger, and swears it by Rama, the store of compassion. He says that he has brought this ring, which Rama gave him as a token for her. Sita asks how a man and a monkey can be together, and Hanuman tells her how their friendship came about.

When she had looked at the lovely ring, beautifully engraved with Ráma’s name, she was all astonishment, for she recognized it, and her heart fluttered with mingled joy and sorrow. “Who can conquer the unconquerable Raghurái? This cannot be any trick of Maya.” All sorts of fancies passed through her mind, till Hanumán spoke in honeyed accents and began to recount Rámchandra’s praises. As Síta listened, her grief took flight. Intently she hearkened with all her soul as well as her ears, while he related the whole story from the very beginning. “The tale you tell is so grateful to my ears; why do you not show yourself, friend? Then Hanumán advanced and drew near. She turned and sunk to the ground in bewilderment. “Noble Jánaki, I am Ráma’s messenger; the Fountain of mercy himself attests my truth I have brought this ring, lady, which Ráma gave me for you as a token.” “Tell me how can monkeys consort with man?” He then explained how they had come together.
