Dashrath Krit Shani Stotra: Lyrics and Meaning
दशरथकृत शनि स्तोत्र
Traditional; from the Padma Purana, spoken by King Dasharatha
The Dashrath Krit Shani Stotra ("the hymn to Shani made by Dasharatha") is a Sanskrit hymn of praise to Shani, the god of the planet Saturn and the son of Surya, the Sun. In nine verses King Dasharatha, the father of Rama, bows to Shani again and again. He names Shani's dark and deep-blue colour, his tall and lean form, his long beard and matted hair, his slow movement (the name Manda means "the slow one"), his austerity and yoga, and his birth from the Sun. He praises him as one who can give a kingdom and take it away, and ends by asking for his grace.

Our explanation The king repeats what Shani has just said of himself earlier in the chapter (verses 19–20): gods, demons and people, Siddhas, Vidyadharas and serpent beings, all on whom Shani turns his gaze come to ruin, root and all. Then he asks: "Be gracious to me, O god. I have come to you as one worthy of a boon."

About the Dashrath Krit Shani Stotra
The hymn is part of the Padma Purana, in its last book, the Uttara Khanda. There Shiva tells the sage Narada a story. King Dasharatha learns that Shani is about to pass through the star Rohini, which, the story says, would bring twelve years of famine. The king rides his chariot up among the stars to stop him. Shani is pleased by his courage and grants him boons, and the king then praises Shani with these verses. The same chapter speaks of reciting the hymn at dawn on Saturday, Shani's day of the week. Only the nine verses of praise are given here, not the story around them.
The text is read from the Poona edition of the Padma Purana printed in 1894, where the hymn is chapter 34, verses 27 to 35. In one word it follows the wording that present-day books print: "koṭarākṣāya", "to the one with deep-set eyes", in verse 4, where the 1894 printing has "koṭarākhyāya". The printing's word, and two other places where present-day books differ, are listed under their verses.
Under each verse, a word-by-word list gives every word with a short meaning in English and Hindi, and its entry in Monier-Williams' Sanskrit-English Dictionary (1899), with the page and column, so the meaning can be checked in the printed book.
How to say it
Most lines begin with "namaḥ" or "namo" ("salutation"): before a voiced sound "namaḥ" becomes "namo" (namo nirmāṃsa…), and "namas te" is said as written. In "namo'stu te" and "bhāskare'bhayadāya" the sign ऽ (avagraha) marks a short "a" that is not spoken: namostu te, bhāskarebhayadāya. "Śiti" has the soft "sh" of "shine"; "ṣ" in "śuṣka" and "bhīṣaṇa" is said with the tongue turned back.
When it is recited
The Padma Purana chapter that gives the hymn speaks of reciting it at dawn on Saturday (Shanivara, Shani's day of the week).
