Sankat Mochan Hanuman Ashtak: Lyrics and Meaning

Traditionally attributed to Tulsidas

The Sankat Mochan Hanuman Ashtak is a hymn of eight stanzas to Hanuman. "Sankat mochan" means "the one who frees from trouble", and "ashtak" means "a set of eight". Each stanza tells one time in the Ramayana when Hanuman ended a danger, and each ends with the same line: who in the world does not know that your name is Sankat Mochan? The stanzas are savaiyas, a long metre of Braj poetry, so the language is close to Braj. Many families recite it with the Hanuman Chalisa.

Our explanation When Hanuman was a child, he swallowed the sun, and the three worlds went dark. The whole world was afraid, and no one could end this trouble. Then the gods came and pleaded with him; he let the sun go and ended their distress. The refrain asks: who in the world does not know, O monkey hero (kapi), that your name is Sankat Mochan, "the one who frees from trouble"?

Our explanation Sugriva, the monkey king, lived on a mountain in fear of his brother Bali, and from there he saw the great lord, Rama, coming along the road. The second line recalls the curse of a great sage (in the Ramayana, the sage Matanga's curse kept Bali away from that mountain); startled, Sugriva wondered what plan to make. Hanuman took the form of a brahmin, brought the great lord to him, and so ended the grief of Sugriva, called here a servant (dās). The refrain asks who in the world does not know the name Sankat Mochan.

Our explanation Sugriva sent the monkeys with Angada to search for Sita and told them: "If you set foot here without news of her, you will not escape us alive." They searched until they were worn out on the shore of the sea. Then Hanuman brought back news of Sita and so saved their lives. The refrain asks who in the world does not know the name Sankat Mochan.

Our explanation Ravana frightened Sita and told the demonesses to make her give up her grief, that is, to turn her mind from Rama. At that time Hanuman, the great lord, went and killed great demons. In her grief Sita was asking the ashoka tree for fire; Hanuman gave her the Lord's ring and ended her sorrow. The refrain asks who in the world does not know the name Sankat Mochan.

Our explanation In the war, Ravana's side struck without warning and threw the snake noose over everyone. Rama and the whole army fell senseless; it was a heavy trouble. Then Hanuman brought Garuda, the lord of birds, who cut the bonds and ended the great fear. The refrain asks who in the world does not know the name Sankat Mochan.

Our explanation When Ahiravana carried Rama and his brother away to the underworld, he worshipped the goddess with full rites, and his people planned together to offer the two as a sacrifice. Hanuman went to help at once and destroyed Ahiravana with his army. (The 1914 printing names him Mahiravana; some tellings make them two demon brothers.) The refrain asks who in the world does not know the name Sankat Mochan.

Our explanation The last stanza turns to the singer. Hanuman, the great hero and lord, has done the work of the great gods; the singer asks him to look and consider: what trouble of "a poor one like me" is there that he cannot remove? The singer prays: "Quickly take away, Hanuman, great lord, whatever trouble is ours." This is the singer's prayer, not a promise. The refrain asks who in the world does not know the name Sankat Mochan.

About the Sankat Mochan Hanuman Ashtak

Tradition gives the hymn to Tulsidas (died 1623), and later printings close with a couplet that names him. The oldest printing found does not name an author, and in 1889 G. A. Grierson listed a "Sankat Mochan" among the works given to Tulsidas but called it "a short didactic work". So the authorship rests on tradition.

The words shown are the ones families sing today, in today's order, checked against several present-day printings. The oldest printing found, a Bombay anthology of 1914 that calls the hymn "Sankat Mochan Savaiya", has an older wording: in stanza 1, for example, it says that the sacrifices failed when the sun was gone, and it puts the stanza about Lakshmana third, where today's order has it fifth. That printing is the cited source, and its text is shown under each stanza. Present-day books also add a closing couplet. It is not in the 1914 printing we follow, so it is not part of the text shown here.

How to say it

Braj is spoken like Hindi: a final short "a" is usually silent (Hanumān, not Hanumāna), though singers sometimes sound it to fit the metre. The IAST line writes every vowel as spelled. Words that the 1914 printing also has keep its spelling, which often writes v for b (uvāro for ubāro, vinatī for binatī), as many printings of its time do.
