Awadhi text: Satik Gutka Ramayan: the Ramcharitmanas of Tulsidas with the Hindi commentary of Pt. Rameshwar Bhatt of Agra, with the Vairagya Sandipani, the Hanuman Chalisa and a glossary (Gudhartha Chintamani); seventh edition, 1924. Meanings: written for Pujadeep with AI help and reviewed. About the Hanuman Chalisa
Tradition attributes it to Tulsidas (died 1623), the poet of the Ramcharitmanas, and its last chaupai names him. The attribution rests on tradition: G. A. Grierson's list of his works (1889) does not name the hymn. It was already in print by 1880, when the Bengal Library recorded an edition "by Tulsidás".
The hymn recalls Hanuman's deeds in the Ramayana: carrying Rama's ring across the sea to Sita, burning Lanka, bringing the sanjivani herb to save Lakshmana, and, as a child, swallowing the sun, taking it for a fruit. Many families recite it daily. Its later lines say what reciting it brings; these are shown as the text's own words.
