About the Shiv Chalisa
The text names its poet as Ayodhyadas, in the opening doha and in the last chaupai. Nothing more is known of him. Its closing doha gives its own date, the sixth day of the month Margashirsha in "Samvat sixty-four", which many read as Samvat 1964 (1907). That is the text's own claim.
Which printing we follow, and why: no printing from 1930 or earlier was found. The oldest copy we found, an undated pocket book of the Naval Kishore Press, Lucknow, from before 1957, differs from the words most families sing today. For example, it lacks the line "dhūp dīp naivedya caṛhāve" ("offers incense, a lamp and food"). So the text here follows a printing that has the familiar words: the first edition (2000) of a collection of chalisas from Randhir Prakashan, Hardwar, read on its page images. In six places, where two present-day printings from different publishers agree against it, the text follows them, and the 2000 printing's word is shown as another reading. The Naval Kishore book and a later Jaipur printing are shown as other readings under each verse where they differ.
The verses describe Shiva's form (the moon on his forehead, the Ganga flowing from his head, the garland of skulls, the tiger skin, Parvati at his left side), and recall his deeds as the text tells them: sending Skanda (Shadanana) to kill the demon Taraka, killing Jalandhara and the Tripura demons, fulfilling Bhagiratha's wish for the Ganga, and drinking the poison from the churning of the ocean, which made his throat blue (Nilakantha). They also tell how Rama worshipped Shiva with a thousand lotuses. The later verses ask Shiva for help in trouble and say what reciting the hymn brings; these are shown as the text's own words.
The printing has 41 chaupais. We count forty and show the poet's closing chaupai apart.
How to say it
Sung Hindi drops the final short "a" (Shiv, not Shiva), though singers sometimes sound it to fit the metre. The IAST line writes every vowel as spelled.
