Lingashtakam: Lyrics and Meaning
लिंगाष्टकम्
Author unknown (traditional)
The Lingashtakam ("eight verses on the linga") is a Sanskrit hymn of praise to the Shiva linga, the sign and emblem under which Shiva is worshipped in temples and homes. Each of its eight verses gives the linga three names of praise and ends with the same refrain, "tat praṇamāmi sadāśivaliṅgam", a bow to that linga of Sadashiva. A ninth verse states what the hymn says its reciter gains. Many families recite it on Mondays, in the month of Shravan and on Maha Shivaratri, often while offering water or flowers to a linga.

brahmamurārisurārcitaliṃgaṃ nirmalabhāsitaśobhitaliṃgam |janmajaduḥkhavināśakaliṃgaṃ tatpraṇamāmi sadāśivaliṃgam || 1 ||
Our explanation The hymn praises the linga that Brahma, Vishnu (Murari) and the gods worship, the linga that shines with a spotless light and is beautiful. The hymn says that it destroys the sorrow that comes with birth. The refrain bows to that linga of Sadashiva, the ever-auspicious one. The old printings read "nirmala-bhāṣita", "praised in pure words", in place of "nirmala-bhāsita".

Our explanation The hymn says that whoever recites this holy Lingashtakam near Shiva reaches Shiva's world and rejoices with Shiva. This is the hymn's own claim about its recitation.

About the Lingashtakam
No printing we read names its author, so it is shown as anonymous. Some present-day sources, such as Wikipedia, ascribe it to Adi Shankara; the old printings we read do not.
The text is read from a Bombay anthology of Sanskrit hymns, the Brihat Stotra Ratnakara, third edition (1899). Like other printings of its time, it writes the refrain in full only in verse 1; in the later verses it prints a short cue ("tatpraṇa°", "tatpra°"), which means the whole refrain. The 1912 edition of the same book and a 1905 Bombay printing were compared word by word; their few differences are listed under each verse. Two words follow the wording that books print today, checked against two present-day publishers: "nirmalabhāsita" ("shining clear") in verse 1, where the old printings have "nirmalabhāṣita" ("praised in pure words"), and "saṃcita" ("gathered") in verse 5, as the 1912 edition prints it, where the 1899 printing has "sañcit". Both old readings are shown under their verses.
Under each verse, a word-by-word list gives every word of the verse with a short meaning in English and Hindi, and its entry in Monier-Williams' Sanskrit-English Dictionary (1899), with the page and column, so the meaning can be checked in the printed book.
How to say it
The IAST line writes the printed spelling. The printing writes a nasal before a consonant as a dot (anusvāra): "liṃgam", "sugaṃdhi", "kuṃkuma", "paṃkaja"; it is said as the nasal of the next letter (liṅgam, sugandhi, kuṅkuma, paṅkaja). The cue "tatpraṇa°" or "tatpra°" at the end of verses 2 to 8 is said as the full refrain, "tat praṇamāmi sadāśivaliṅgam".
