Subrahmanya Bhujangam: Lyrics and Meaning
सुब्रह्मण्य भुजंगम्
Traditionally attributed to Adi Shankaracharya
The Subrahmanya Bhujangam is a Sanskrit hymn of 33 verses to Murugan, the son of Shiva and Parvati, also called Subrahmanya, Skanda, Kartikeya, Kumara and Guha. Its name comes from its metre, bhujanga-prayata ("the serpent's gait"), which the last verse names. The first verse asks Ganesha to remove obstacles; in the second the poet says he knows no learning, yet a six-faced light shines in his heart and the words come by themselves.

Our explanation The hymn opens with a prayer to Ganesha. Though always a child in form, he breaks the mountains of obstacles; though he has the face of a great elephant, Shiva, the five-faced god, honours him; Brahma, Indra and the other gods seek him. The poet asks that this form of blessing, named Ganesha, give him prosperity.

Our explanation The poet always takes refuge in Skanda's mighty arms. They punished Brahma (the creator); they hold up all the worlds in play; they cut off the trunks of the elephant-faced demon (another reading: they put the trunks of elephants to shame); they are the rod of death for enemies; they killed the hosts of Indra's enemies; and they are skilled in protecting the world.

Our explanation The hymn says that when great diseases, such as epilepsy, skin disease, wasting disease, piles, diabetes, fever, madness and tumours, and all evil spirits see the sacred ash given on Skanda's leaf, they run away at once. This is the hymn's own praise of the sacred ash; it is not medical advice.

Our explanation The hymn says that whoever bows to Guha and recites with devotion this hymn, made in the metre called bhujanga ('the serpent's gait'), gains sons, a wife, wealth and a long life, and at the end becomes one with Skanda. This is the hymn's own claim.

About the Subrahmanya Bhujangam
The hymn then praises Murugan by the sea and on the "fragrant hill", describes his form from his feet to his six faces and twelve eyes, and recalls Shiva calling the child from his mother's lap. Verses 20 to 22 ask him to come at the hour of death, spear in hand, riding the peacock, and say "Do not fear". The hymn ends with prayers for the family and the household, a request for forgiveness as a child asks a parent, salutations to his peacock, spear, goat and rooster, and a verse of victory. Verses 25 and 33 say what the hymn holds the sacred ash and the recitation give; they are shown as the hymn's own words, and verse 25 is not medical advice.
The printed colophon names it a work of Shankara, and tradition credits it to Adi Shankara. Tradition also holds that he sang it at the Murugan temple of Tiruchendur, on the sea shore in Tamil Nadu; the Kanchi Kamakoti Peetham's page on Tiruchendur says so, and the hymn itself speaks of the Lord on the shore of the great ocean.
The text is read from a booklet of Shankara's bhujanga hymns printed by the Sri Vani Vilas Press, Srirangam, in 1911. In one word (verse 26) it follows the wording of today's texts, "absorbed in Guha", where the 1911 booklet prints "in the house"; the booklet's word is listed under the verse.
How to say it
The IAST line writes the printed spelling. The printing writes a nasal before a consonant as a dot (anusvāra): "saṃnidhānaṃ", "saṃchanna", "śaṃkare", "bhujaṃga"; it is said as the nasal of the next letter (sannidhānaṃ, sañchanna, śaṅkare, bhujaṅga). Each line has four groups of short-long-long syllables (bhujaṅga-prayāta); "kḷpta" (verses 12, 24 and 33) has the rare vowel ḷ, said like "klri".
When it is recited
A hymn to Murugan (Subrahmanya, Skanda), for his festivals, such as Skanda Sashti and Thaipusam.
