Aarti Kunj Bihari Ki: Lyrics and Meaning
Traditional
Aarti Kunj Bihari Ki is an aarti to Krishna, a song sung while a lamp is waved before him. It names him Kunj Bihari, "the one who roams the groves" of Vrindavan, Giridhar, "the one who held up the hill", and Murari, "the enemy of the demon Mura". Families sing it at evening worship and on Janmashtami, Krishna's birthday, and many Krishna temples sing it at the close of worship.

Our explanation This is the aarti of Kunj Bihari, "the one who roams the groves" of Vrindavan, who is also Giridhar, "the one who held up the hill", and Krishna Murari, "the enemy of Mura". The singers sing this line again after every stanza.

The line ends on the lovely beauty of "dear Shyama"; Shyama is a name of Radha in Braj songs, and some singers hear it as Krishna, "the dark one".

About the Aarti Kunj Bihari Ki
The language is Braj, the Hindi of the Mathura and Vrindavan country. The stanzas picture Krishna with his flute and peacock crown, Radha beside him, the gopis (the cowherd women) and the river bank at night, and they recall the Ganga, which flows from his feet. The last stanza asks him to hear the cry of a poor and troubled person.
The aarti is traditional and carries no poet's name. A Marathi book on the writers of central India (about 1939) names a poet, Shridharrao of Bajranggad, as its maker; we found no other source for this. No printing from 1930 or earlier was found. The text here is read from a 1993 book of daily worship printed at Lakhanpur, near Jammu, and checked against a 2009 Mumbai printing. That printing marks a return to the refrain after the second line, so it shows five stanzas where many books show four.
How to say it
The text is Braj and keeps Braj spellings: स्यामा (syāmā) for श्यामा, सिव (siva) for शिव, सीस for शीश, श्रवन for श्रवण. The IAST line writes the letters as printed, every final short "a" included; in singing the final "a" is dropped (sung "Kunj Bihārī" for the written kuṃjabihārī). "श्रीगिरधर॰" after a stanza is the printed cue to sing the refrain line "śrī giradhara kṛṣṇamurārī kī".
