Om Namo Narayanaya: Word-by-Word Meaning

ॐ नमो नारायणाय

From the Narayana Upanishad (Krishna Yajurveda); author unknown

Om Namo Narayanaya ("Om, bowing to Narayana") is the eight-syllable mantra (aṣṭākṣara) of Vishnu as Narayana. Its written source is the Narayana Upanishad, a short Upanishad of the Krishna Yajurveda. The third part of that Upanishad builds the mantra word by word: "Om" first, then "namaḥ", then "nārāyaṇāya". It counts the syllables, one, two and five, and calls the whole "the eight-syllable word of Narayana".

How to read these English letters (IAST)

Our explanation The mantra is built word by word: say "Om" first, "namaḥ" (bowing) after it, and "nārāyaṇāya" (to Narayana) at the end. Om is one syllable, namaḥ two, nārāyaṇāya five: this is the eight-syllable word of Narayana. The text says that whoever studies this eight-syllable word goes free of blame, lives a full life, and gains lordship over beings, growth of wealth and lordship over cattle, and after that reaches immortality. The last line names this part "the head of the Sama Veda".

Edition differences. Another printing or text reads this place differently.

  • The printed edition reads: ॐमित्यग्रे व्याहरेत् । नम इति पश्चात् । नारायणायेत्युपरिष्टात् ।

    एतत्सामवेदशिरोऽधीते ॥
The printing writes the Om sign before 'मि' ('ॐमित्यग्रे', 'ॐमित्येकाक्षरम्'), a common way of printing 'ओम् + इति'; it is spelled out as 'ओमित्यग्रे', 'ओमित्येकाक्षरम्' so that the words can be read and transliterated. The 1925 printing prints the same Om sign. Spelling, not wording: the gate folds it (decision 14 addendum e). 'नारायणास्याष्टाक्षरं' (a long ā after ण) breaks the grammar; the display has 'नारायणस्याष्टाक्षरं', as the same passage prints in the next sentence and the 1925 printing prints both times. Same rule as the Gita printing flaws (GOAL.md, 12 Oct 2026).
  • Punctuation The 1925 Bombay printing reads: … एतद्वै नारायणस्याष्टाक्षरं पदम् । … पदमध्येति । अनपब्रुवः सर्वमायुरेति । विन्दते … The 1925 printing has 'नारायणस्याष्टाक्षरं' both times and puts dandas after 'पदमध्येति' and 'सर्वमायुरेति'.
  • Word Today's text from sanskritdocuments.org reads: ओमित्यग्रे व्याहरेत् । नमो इति पश्चात् । … ओमित्येकाक्षरम् । नमो इति द्वे अक्षरे । … अनपब्रुवस्सर्वमायुरेति । … ततोऽमृतत्वमश्नुत इति । य एवं वेद ॥ Today's recitation text reads 'नमो इति' for 'नम इति' (twice) and adds 'य एवं वेद' at the end; it puts 'एतत्सामवेदशिरोऽधीते' in brackets after the part. The 1923 and 1925 printings read as shown.

How to read these English letters (IAST)

Our explanation Brahman, the bliss within, the Person, has the form of Om. Its sounds are a, u and m; these came together as one, and that is Om. The yogi who says it is freed from the bonds of birth and worldly life. The text says that one who worships with the mantra "Om namo nārāyaṇāya" will go to the abode of Vaikuntha. That abode is the lotus (of the heart), full of knowledge, shining like lightning. The Son of Devaki is dear to the Vedic seers; Madhusudana is dear to them; the lotus-eyed one (Pundarikaksha) is dear to them; Vishnu, the Unfallen (Achyuta), is dear to them. The one Narayana, present in all beings, is the cause and the Person, himself without cause: the supreme Brahman, Om. The last line names this part "the head of the Atharva Veda".

How to read these English letters (IAST)

Our explanation The last paragraph speaks of reciting the Upanishad itself. The text says that one who recites it in the morning destroys the wrongs done in the night, and one who recites it in the evening destroys the wrongs done in the day; one who recites it evening and morning becomes free of wrong even if he has done wrong. One who recites it at noon, facing the sun, is freed from the five great sins and the lesser ones, gains the merit of reciting all the Vedas, and reaches union with Narayana, with the glorious Narayana: so it is for one who knows this.

About the Om Namo Narayanaya

This page gives the two parts of the Upanishad that teach the mantra, the third and the fourth, read from a printing made at Adyar, Madras, in 1923 and checked against a Bombay printing of 1925. The Upanishad has four short parts in this printing; the first two praise Narayana as the source of all beings and as all that is. The fourth ends with the benefit of reciting the Upanishad morning, noon and evening. One line of the fourth part, naming Pundarikaksha and Vishnu Achyuta, is given by the 1923 printing only in a footnote; it is shown here as the 1925 printing prints it.

Both parts shown here make promises for those who repeat the mantra. These are the text's own words and are marked as such. The Advaita commentator printed with the 1923 text, Upanishad-Brahma-Yogin, explains them in his own way, and his reading is shown with its school. The mantra also has a central place in other traditions, such as the Sri Vaishnavas of South India; their readings are not shown here, because no source for them was read on a printing from 1930 or earlier.

How to say it

Said "om na-mo nā-rā-ya-ṇā-ya". Om is one syllable, namo two and nārāyaṇāya five: eight in all, as the Upanishad counts them. In namo the final "o" is long. The IAST line writes every vowel as spelled.
