ॐ जय जगदीश हरे

Traditional

Om Jai Jagdish Hare is an aarti, a song sung while a lamp is waved before God, usually at the close of worship. It praises God as Jagdish, "lord of the world", and as Hari, a name of Vishnu. Many Hindu families sing it every evening, and temples sing it at the end of a puja.

Our explanation The refrain opens with Om and hails God as Jagdish, lord of the world, and as Hari, and calls him svāmī, "Lord". The aarti says that he removes the troubles of his devotees in a moment. The 1922 printing that this text is based on calls him pitā, "Father", here, and one present-day booklet has prabhu, "Lord".

Om Jai Jagdish Hare

Manohar Pushpanjali, 1922. Use the arrows, the arrow keys or a presentation remote to move on.

About the Om Jai Jagdish Hare

The aarti is traditional: no printing from before 1931 that we found names its author. Modern sources credit it to Pandit Shardha Ram Phillauri (died 1881), a writer and preacher from Phillaur in Punjab, and read the word śraddhā ("faith") in the last stanza as his name; the 1922 printing that dates this text puts that word in quotation marks.

The text is based on a Lahore bhajan collection printed in 1922, whose title page offers it to the "Arya people" (ārya jāti). Where that printing differs from the words families sing today, the page shows today's words, checked against three present-day texts from three publishers. So the refrain opens with "Om" and calls God "Lord" (svāmī), where the 1922 printing has "Father" (pitā). Stanzas 2 and 6 use the familiar words ("tum bin aur na dūjā", "ṭhākur … apne hāth uṭhāo, dvār paṛā tere"), which a 1913 Bombay bhajan book also prints. Each older word is listed under its stanza.

How to say it

Sung Hindi drops the final short "a" (Jagdīś, not Jagadīśa), though the IAST line writes every vowel as spelled. "ओं जय॰" after each stanza is the printed cue to sing the refrain again, beginning "Om".
